Dreams gives us hope and drives us forward, while demons hinder and challenge us. We are formed as individuals. Inspired by the film Director Ingmar Bergman’s infamous demon list, Dreams & demons captures the hopes and fears which reside within us as individuals and as community. This piece is a platform where dreams can be revealed to inspire others, and where demons can be voiced and released.
This artwork relies on the input of its viewers, and I ask you to delve into your heart and write me your dreams and demons to be be incorporated into the artwork through stitching and weaving.
Bio:
Conversations are fundamental to my art-making. I am interested in the stimulus and symbolic meaning of colour and pattern and use them within my drawing, printmaking and textile-based artworks to explore the idea of identity –whether it be a person, culture or place. I also work with the idea of the ‘double-take’ and drawing in the viewer to explore more nuanced subtexts. The preoccupation with identity emerged and developed while I was living in Sweden between 1996 and 2011 – initially as a foreigner and then as a naturalized Swede. I received my MFA from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden in 2000 and returned to Avalon in 2011 after a fully funded year-long Artists Residency at Rimbun Dahan, Malaysia.
